How is the application updated through the Play Market?

Is it being reinstalled?
Here I have an application with a local db. When I compile the application, the components are updated, but the database is not. If I specify the clean install option, everything is updated.

Reinstallable, yes (but only executable code and resources). All the data that was saved by the application (databases, SharedPreferences) remains and rightly so (users would be very indignant if the photo application destroyed all their photos with each update).
