How does MIUI (Mi Massage) understand that SMS will reach via the Internet?

In the proprietary shell of Xiaomi MIUI, you can enable an option that allows you to send SMS and MMS to other MIUI smartphones via the Internet if both smartphones are online. How does my phone understand that the phone of my interlocutor is now online?

It's simple, this is not a P2P service. Each MIUI device with the corresponding service enabled is registered with the server. When sending a message, the service on the sender's phone makes a request to the server " number such and such on-line ?" If yes, it sends a message to the server; if not, it sends it via SMS.

Just like a message in whatsapp / telegram. If the phone is offline, then it will receive a message when it becomes online. The same principle.
