How does mdns work?

my application needs a thing that allows you to convert device names to IP addresses and back on the local network. Zeroconf with its mdns is ideal for this, but the trouble is, all known implementations of zeroconf and mdns under node js (on which my application is based) are complete shit, and do not satisfy my needs. So I decided to write my own implementation! Now it remains to understand how your mdns works. Does anyone have documentation?
