The problem here is the following... when uploading images via ftp, they are not registered in the database and thumbnails of the required sizes are not created for them. There are separate plugins that "transfer" images from ftp to the VP library, that is, transfer files to uploads, create thumbnails and register them in the database. But the fact is that the plugins I know somehow do not work well with a large number of photos. The only adequate utility is wp cli, through which you can generate thumbnails for pictures and, accordingly, they will be added to the database.
