Error while importing a project into a repository?

When trying to import a project (site) into the repository, instead of the expected:

Adding xxx.php<br/>
Adding xx2.php<br/>
....<br/>

Many lines like the following are shown:

Adding som_file.php<br/>
svn: E000024: Can't open file '/var/svn/repos/db/transactions/0-3.txn/next-ids': Too many open files

svn version 1.7.2, RHEL.
Nothing on the internet :(
