How to track the version and build number of the software?

I'm looking for utilities to generate a version number like: 1.3.14. At the same time, so that the version number is generated automatically when compiling the entire project (it would be nice to keep track of the build number as well). What can you recommend?
PS The project is in Java, written in IDEA.
