dropbox

Dropbox is good for everyone, but I would like to improve it a little.

Let's say we have:

  • 2 computers (let's call them Home and Work )
  • Dropbox client installed on both computers
  • There is a 100Mbps channel between computers.
  • Computers are on different subnets
  • Channel for Internet access on each computer - 5Mbps

How Dropbox Works Now

  1. A file appeared on the home computer
  2. The file is uploaded to the Dropbox server at a speed of 5Mbps
  3. A work computer downloads a file from Dropbox servers at a speed of 5Mbps

How would you like...

  1. A file appeared on the home computer
  2. The file is uploaded to the Dropbox server at a speed of 5Mbps and to a working computer at a speed of 100Mbps
  3. After the Work computer receives the file, it starts uploading it to the Dropbox server at a speed of 5Mbps

That is, the file will be uploaded to the working computer very quickly, and it will already be uploaded to the Dropbox server with a total speed of 10Mbps.

Tell me, is it possible to implement such a scheme (at least without paragraph 3)?

@korzunin

As an option - raise a tunnel between computers

@izmalk

in general, everything is already implemented, with the exception of paragraph 3 "As we would like."
But admit it - many of the people at work or at home (except for geeks) have two separate channels for computers within the network that are inaccessible simultaneously from each of the computers?
PS Yes, Dropbox synchronizes files within the network, but no, it only updates (compares) the file index.

AeroFS can help, it drives purely P2P traffic. But it's in deep alpha.

@Tomasina

maybe you should switch to Wuala? There p2p was initially readied, plus encryption.
