What is the easiest build of Linux to install in a virtual machine?

Hello,
The question is short: Is it possible to install such a Linux assembly on a VirtualBox virtual machine so that I don’t have to mount / write anything on the command line, etc.? (but only - click "next" during installation, etc.), and that the browser and file manager be in the preinstalled list of programs? If so, what is this assembly and where is the best place to download it?
And now in detail:
I do not understand Linux'e and its features.
But as a result of the fact that the service that I use (Dropbox) is disconnected from Windows XP, I decided to install Linux for myself. To begin with (so as not to spoil anything for other tasks), I decided to put it on a virtual machine.
I know that Dropbox can be used through a browser, but it works slower + you lose access to files without access to the Internet.
There were no problems installing VirtualBox.
First I found advice and decided to install Mint. As a result, everything was installed and working, but there was only a black screen in the graphical interface, and there was not even a command line, what to do is not clear. (maybe it was where it was - but my knowledge was not enough for this, and the desired result was that the icons of pre-installed applications were on the screen).
Then I decided to install Ubuntu. As a result, it was not installed at all, the reason: "Unable to allocate and lock memory".
Therefore, I decided to ask for advice - maybe there is an assembly where all these problems will not arise? Or am I doing something wrong?
Thanks in advance!

Download the Ubuntu 14 image (I suspect that your hardware is old, so 14 is better, not 16). We create a virtual machine with a blank disk, connect the image in the settings. Let's start the virtual machine. Press "Next" repeatedly. Aleluja. After installation, do not forget to install additions for the guest OS, there again it will be enough to enter the password once and press enter twice.
In general, "Unable to allocate and lock memory" may indicate that you simply do not have enough RAM. Considering that you are still on XP, you most likely have a maximum of 4 gigabytes of memory, which is not enough for XP and a virtual machine in which "you do not need to use the console."
And even better - give up this disastrous business and put yourself a seven. For if you didn’t manage to put Linux on the virtual machine yourself, then the issue of forwarding folders from the host OS to the guest OS and back can completely drive you to a dead end.

Watching, learning.
The problem is not linux, the problem is the lack of advanced PC skills.

On VmWare it is very easy and simple to get up Ubuntu, for example. Almost nothing needs to be done.

The easiest way is to download a ready-made image for the virtual machine with the installed system.

Linux is the kernel. And you, obviously, are talking about OS based on the Linux kernel.
All common distributions are installed in a virtual machine with a few clicks.
