Does the performance of a wi-fi router depend on the provider?

I don’t understand wi-fi routers well, I’m moving soon and there will be Internet, but I need my own router, in my opinion there is no Internet. I heard the hypothesis that the router is flashed for a specific provider and does not work with others, is this true? Do I need to manually reflash (under Vodafone)?
