Does the laptop show less memory than it has?

Tell me pliz, I bought a laptop (Acer Aspire 5942g), it says RAM 4G, Memtest + shows 2 strips of 2G, but it only tests 2G and Windows (Vista 64) shows 2G available everywhere.
Is this something I don’t understand, or did garbage happen and return?

Try to pull out the strips and put them back in, if there are no seals, it often helps, you can check which one is working. If there are seals, return it.

Open Task Manager, on the Performance tab, click Resource Monitor. In the resource monitor, select the Memory tab, everything is displayed and shown there, and how much is reserved for devices, and how much is busy, cached and free. If only 2 GB is visible there, then iron is definitely to blame, we carry it as a guarantee or for an exchange. If 4 is visible, and 2 is reserved there for devices or something else, then we will continue to dance. I had a case that 64 gigs were inserted into the server, it sees 52. As a result, it turned out that this was a hardware malfunction of the motherboard, and then Windows showed all 64 gigs, and showed unused ones in the reserved ones. In general, Russinovich has several useful articles from memory, the theory is described there, and the tools are given, in general, I recommend it.

To all who advised - thank you! What could - corrected karma.
I tell for posterity.
Take it to the store. Chel looked and began to tell me that this vidyakh bit off the memory. When asked how to turn it off (I think so, yes, I look like an idiot) - I could not answer, like nothing - it was not good to buy a laptop with such a powerful video card. Then, apparently, he realized that this could not be and I would not give up so easily, he began to talk about the fact that the laptop has the most powerful percent on the planet (!) And I, attention, will never need 4G of memory! I started talking about the technology of 4 cores and how the processor works, gee. On the question of what has memory to answer could not. Well, then a generally unpleasant moment began, he freaked out and refused to sign a paper about the malfunction. Like watching a DVD is enough for you, you don’t understand anything, I’m special here and all that. I went to the stand in the store and opened the system properties of exactly the same laptop - it shows 4G.
Here =)

This often happens with new memory. Careless sellers stick their stickers on the modules, capturing the contact pads. Then they rip it off, and some of the glue may remain, and the module is either not seen by the system or is buggy. It helps either to stick a banal one, or to clean the contacts with rubber.
A psychotic “special salesperson” is not the best thing you can meet in a store, but you can’t give up with such people, on the contrary, you need to push your line, bring experts with you, call store managers, write to LCD, etc., don’t give them a reason once again make sure that their method of “steaming” is working, otherwise they will suck in the people whatever they want and how they want. Such people should be politely put in their place.

Call the store and explain the situation. What will they say. In my opinion, it is impossible to solve the problem without opening the memory compartment, so in my opinion there is only one way out - to return it to the store. By the way, did you install the OS yourself or was it already pre-installed (I mean, maybe they forgot which drivers, although it is unlikely with memory)?

Um, there is of course, a day has not passed since the purchase.
What do you mean it shouldn't be like that? Am I going to look like an idiot?
And then with the process, too, "strange." The frequency is written 2.6 GHz, but writes 1.73 GHz, but because 2 virtual core, then it seems right, right? ;)
