The laptop does not turn on after a USB device is plugged into it, is this possible?

An external HDD (usb) was plugged into an ASUS laptop, it immediately turned off. Since then, he is a complete kripich, does not respond to the keys. We waited about 3 hours, tried to turn it on again - still a brick.

Two questions:
1) Can this be from a passively powered usb device?
2) If possible, what is the failure mechanism? What is the reason?

It happened more than once. Try pulling out (for a minute) and inserting the battery and back.

Looks like the power went off. Usually, the +5V line of the USB ports is protected by a fuse, and when it is shorted, only the USB ports stop working (more precisely, they lose power). But usually doesn't mean always! Most likely, you didn’t have protection, or it didn’t work, and a common +5 volt stabilizer flew out from overload.

Could this be from a passively powered usb device?
I had one flash drive, which, when plugged into the USB ports of a laptop / computer, then took out these ports (in the port managers, the port was marked as inoperative or “device not defined”).
There must have been something there, I don't know. When stuck into other computers, the HDD is determined normally?

This method is a little universal for all laptops. Pull out the battery and without a cable, without a battery, hold down the start button. Then you can try to insert one by one. Will work.

Once, in the USB 3.0 port of the ASUS laptop, I plugged the USB flash drive “upside down”, entered it as a native one and the laptop temporarily “died”. Since then, I have not blindly inserted. =)

With the inserted charging of the phone on Android (mb not connected with the platform), I also have it.
I take it out for the time of switching on, put it back and everything is ok. Fig knows why.

I'm having a problem right now and I can't figure out what the problem is. The Usb port is not working, the power light is flashing, before this happened, the Usb wire was inserted. Laptop brand lenovo, the battery is not removable, someone can suggest some other options)
