Does SCCM work without a CAL?

Good afternoon!
There was an idea to implement SCCM in the company's network.
We need to install software, OS, updates.
As I understand it, for 180 days you can use it for free.
Client PCs require a key per user or per PC.
And I would like to know from your experience, after the end of the test period, if you do not enter the key, then what restrictions will there be? Will the utility continue to work on the client PC?

Tried. 10 licenses were purchased for testing (sort of). The license was not checked on user machines. Didn't get accustomed. In a distributed system, updates are packaged using dfsr (replication service). There were constant problems with the sites. Rolling out an update on thin channels is an eternity. Currently, Kaspersky advanced, because the antivirus is still about three hundred rubles from the machine. It turns out cheaper
