Does a sysadmin need to know SQL database administration?
Hello!
In every second vacancy, I read to the system administrator that knowledge of sql administration is required, mainly microsoft sql, and I even see knowledge of sql programming.
A question - unless the separate person - the database administrator should be engaged in administration of sql of bases?
Is a system administrator responsible for database administration? Do you need to know the SQL language?
If so, what DBMS do you need to know (as I understand microsoft sql) and is there any course or book for a young fighter?
Or is it possible not to bother with studying all this?

In an ideal world, yes there should be a database specialist.

In reality, the system administrator needs to know the basics.
At a minimum, to properly configure the backup and be able to quickly check this backup and pull it out of the archive.

The more you bother with the study, the more you will earn in the end.
If you want to earn only on doshirak, then you can not bother.

IMHO. In modern IT, you need to know as much as possible. Let it be superficial, but you need a representation in all related areas (and not only IT). This will help to find a common language with related departments. I'm not saying that to solve the problem, you need to know the mathematical part - how do you understand why the report is not generated if you don't know what it depends on.
Now the line between specialties (SRE, DevOps and others) is very conditional, and in small enterprises, in general, there can be only 1 admin responsible for everything that is somehow connected with IT.
Have you come across the fact that kettles and electric dryers for shoes are brought to the admin for repairs? I worked as an administrator for six years in an office that held a trading network for the sale of children's goods - and the contingent in it was appropriate.
They didn't bring anything to support...
In a large office, of course, a specially trained person administers the database, and the role of the admin is to install the engine and issue the engine administrator password to this person. But this is far from always the case - in offices a little less, the administrator has to install the engine and start the databases and configure the backup and distribute the rights to the bases.
And how the engine actually works and why it can slow down and what to do so that it doesn’t slow down is also good to know ...
Depends on the job assigned to the sysadmin and what you mean by that... and how much money they pay. There are many types of sysadmins. Some repair replication on the postgres cluster, the second change cartridges and set up accounting programs, the third deal with server hardware, the fourth features help programmers roll out and organize the workflow, the fifth ones use the mouse in Windows. You specify) Because sysadmins are called devps, and secops, and networkers, and environments, and those responsible for the infrastructure, and ordinary enikeev, too, but who they just don’t call that. You can also know databases in different ways too).
