Difference between Nvidia's g-sync and AMD's freesync on 240Hz gaming monitors?

If you buy a 240 Hz monitor with freesync technology, but the corresponding PC has an Nvidia graphics card, will the monitor still produce the same 240 Hz? Or is an AMD card required for this?
