Connecting an additional monitor to iMac?

I have an iMac 21.5 with a small monitor. Is it possible to connect an additional monitor to it and work on both? Or is it impossible to do without dancing with a tambourine?

iMac newer than 2009? Any minidisplay adapter, work on Thunderbolt as well

I have the original and Chinese, besides the difference of 30 bucks, there are a couple of nuances with the Chinese:
- after exiting the slip, sometimes on the external snow appears on the horizon.
- a little more
- the wire is coarser / elastic.
PS, one of the Chinese MiniDisplay -> HDMI did not work with my TV, I bought an Apple one.
