Can you plug an 8-pin into a 4-pin?
The old mother has a 4-pin processor connection, the processor, by the way, is also an old Q9450. It was necessary to change the power supply, I took chieftec for 600 watts, but I didn’t even look at the 8-pin connection on the block (not collapsible) The
question is obvious, can I plug 8 pins with one half into a 4-pin connector?
Or maybe it's better to buy an adapter?

Adapter 8->4 will solve your problem. But you can do without it, since these power connectors are collapsible:
The bent tabs on the contact are stoppers, thanks to which the contact is held in the case. If they are pressed with any suitable flat tool (for example, a sharpened screwdriver), then the contact is easily pulled out. After pulling out, it is necessary to restore the limb of the legs, as shown in my photo. Then you need to get the body of the 4-pin connector from the old PSU, release it from the previous contacts in the same way and (attention!) Insert the contacts just removed from the 8- pin connector in the same order of wire colors . Wrap the remaining 4 contacts unused individually with electrical tape or cut off.
You don’t need an adapter, they are usually all shitty and like to melt under load.
Simply plug into an existing slot.
If suddenly there is no place nearby, then the simplest thing is to cut off the unnecessary half of the connector with a clerical knife.
The method is more complicated - buy an 8-4 adapter, take only a 4-pin block from it.
Throw out the contacts from it and put the contacts from the 8-pin connector there.
