Can the original text strings for DRUPAL8 translation be in Russian?

The question is, can the original strings be in Russian? Or only in English?
As an attempt to load several test strings shows, if the original string with Russian text is translated into English, then the texts of the sites are normally translated when switching languages, but I care whether the Chinese and other French will be adequately perceived by the machines....

The strings can be in Russian, this is bad practice, but it is acceptable if the only language on the site is
Russian. It is better to write source texts in English and then translate into Russian.
