Can the network settings go astray "themselves"?

Good evening, gentlemen!
Can someone tell me if the network settings under Windows Embedded could "by themselves" go astray? Namely, from:
IP: 192.168.0.??
GW: 192.168.0.240
Turn into:
IP: 192.168.0.1
GW: 192.168.0.1
Is such a failure possible (albeit unlikely), or is it definitely the act of a user sitting with full rights?
PS: Logs, alas, no.
Thank you.

If you have not registered static IP, then of course they can.

And if it's not a secret, why gate 240? May I know your netmask?
