Can links be shortened?

Hello,
My links for more than 5 years have, unfortunately, such a large view .../advertisement/nesting/xx/yy/zz/
I want to reduce them and make new ones ... /xx/yy/zz/ (+ through htaccess I will register a redirect for all old to new ones).
How will search engines react to this? please unsubscribe those who are not a theorist, but a practitioner, i.e. I've done this before and anyone with actual experience.
Thanks

@zooby

the main thing is to use a 301 redirect, then the search engines do not complain, although the old links will still appear in the search for some time, so it is better to rebuild the sitemap file with new links and feed it to the search engines.
