Buying an SSD

Thinking about a gift for myself on New Year's Eve. I want an SSD for my 2 year old Asus F80L. There are three questions:

1. Which SSD should I take?
Budget - 10-12 thousand. I want the fastest solution and that the volume is at least 120 gigs.

2. Where can I buy it?
Ebay seems to me not the best option for new electronics. Or am I wrong - Ebay? Or what Internet-shop?

3. Can there be any problems in Ubuntu 10.10 on this SSD?

Write speed 200mb/s? You understand that your laptop processor is not able to withstand so much data. I won't tell you anything on prices, but I will give a lecture on brands and controllers.
Any adequate person will tell you that the number 1 for the system is the Intel G2. Choose a series there for the money. 40MB write speed? Is 4GB in a minute and a half not enough for you? I think the laptop will hardly load the SSD like that. Farther. Reading speed say only 170MB? Are you aware that controllers from other companies write their specifications based on tests of an empty SSD? So it is world-famous that sandforce =< 1200 and Samsung controllers, when writing information to cells once, lose speed (writing and reading in a cell) twice (approximately) and this is an IRREVERSIBLE process. That's how it is. And all these Vertex 2 and other Kingstons are based on such slag.
Of the normal screws for the OS, so far there are only Crucial C300 (64/128/256), Intel G2 (40/80/120/160) and OEMs from Intel in the form of Windows with G2 and V/M/X/E values. Everything. Other screws are money down the drain.
This is not an advertisement for Intel))) it's just true. And indeed, until recently there was only Intel, but now, after tight practical tests, the Krucial screws are put almost on a par with Intel. Good luck with your choice!

You would at least indicate your region. I turn on telepathy, I guess - Murmansk?
In MSC for 12500r you can take 160GB, 120 in the region of 9500r.

Yes, Murmansk. I'm interested in buying in global online stores, so I didn't specify the region. What for? :)
And if in Moscow to buy on an Internet - where?
And what kind of SSD is it for 160 for 12500? What are the speeds?

Recording speeds of more than 200 Mb / s will not be. More precisely, it happens on new SSDs on SandForce controllers, but after overwriting it drops to 60-80 Mb / s.

Choose here and order through shipito. Cheap and cheerful.

With such a budget, I would pay attention to an SSD with a PCI-E interface: www.fcenter.ru/eshop.shtml?94626
The manufacturer's website promises - Write: Up to 450 MB / s

I recommend Corsair Force. And you have to look at eBay. It must be borne in mind that they still die from time to time. So you need to decide which is better: 10-20% savings or a guarantee.

Yesterday I ordered an Intel X25-M (80gb) for my laptop. I read for a long time, compared ... I even thought about buying an ExpressCard SSD to save a regular HDD for the trash. But there aren't many of them for sale yet. Bought from citylink.
It is convenient to compare prices on price.ru or Yandex Market throughout Russia - very convenient.
Soon Intel will start selling a 120Gb model for $250 - it's worth waiting a week or two ...

There are only two choices, either OCZ Vertex 2 or Intel 120/160. 160 will be faster. There are already three ssds at home (in different computers), all Intel (two 80 each and one 40). Only with a laptop there can be problems, I have one (80) in my msi wind u100 netbook. Reading above 70mb / sec (via Victoria hdd) does not rise - restrictions are at the controller level. So it may not be worth the very fastest. The main thing is reading / writing 4k blocks. This usually affects performance more.

Intel X25-M G2 definitely. I have Super Talent G2 in my home note, I chose it according to tests, the brand is little known, therefore it is cheaper, the flight is normal.

Although the topic is already a week old, I will share my opinion. In my experience, a laptop really does not need such speeds at all. Not so long ago I bought a Photofast SSD, chasing a good read and write speed (220/170, it seems, very good at that time). However, it turned out that in real conditions (Windows 7 and Ubuntu), the disk works no faster than one of the first generation Samsung SSDs, which is in my girlfriend's laptop and reads at 100 Mb / s.
So do not chase speed, it is simply not needed, and the overpayment can be significant.
