Buying an app from the App Store and then entering a promo code?

A friend sent a promo code for the app. Before that, I didn’t make purchases in the App Store (the phone is a test one), so I thought that I would need to enter it at the purchase stage. I ended up buying the app. Then I got into the Internet and found out that the code needs to be entered elsewhere. I thought: “Oh, it was, it wasn’t” - and also entered a promo code. The App Store slammed it and did not say anything whether this code was spent or not (after all, the application has already been purchased).
Actually, the question is: did the promo code disappear or did it somehow go towards the purchase (because the SMS about debiting funds from the card has not yet arrived)?
