Are there any hardware limitations for reading CD-RW?

There is an ancient Panasonic RX-D19 radio tape recorder that can play CD-R discs baked for audio, but does not see CD-RW (and does not officially support it). Should I try to tweak the firmware in an attempt to make it support rewritable discs?

No one has yet given an exhaustive correct answer about the reasons, I'll try too ...
1. If the disc is not finalized during recording, it will not be read by the player. The solution is to finalize rather than leave open.
2. As they said in another answer, the reflection from CD-RW is weaker, this is a hardware limitation that cannot be overcome by firmware, but you can try writing discs at a single speed, this takes a long time, but in very rare cases it helps. Sometimes, it also helps to write simply on a different drive - the result is unpredictably different.
3. For DVDs (not CDs) there is a similar problem which can be solved by changing the book type of the media so that the drive thinks the media is not rewritable.

CD-RW has a lower level of reflection. So it's a hardware limitation. Just in case - in the yard 2019)
