Are there any differences between tessellation and triangulation?

Both triangulation and tessellation split objects into polygons. How do they differ and for what purposes is each of them used?

Triangulation is a breakdown of an arbitrary polygon into elementary polygons (triangles).
Tessellation is the splitting of an already triangular mesh again (using Bezier curves, for example) in order to obtain a smoother model.
