An engine for a map service?
Good afternoon, %USERNAME%
I'm looking for a web engine for a map service. It's the engine.
I earnestly ask you not to ask a question - why maps.google.com, maps.yandex.ru and openstreetmaps are bad - they are wonderful, but not suitable for my purposes.
I would also be grateful for any kind of feedback on the proposed engines - how they are in operation.
In particular - mapserver.org/
Ps maybe someone knows what it costs as a backend for OSM?
Kudos to all who answered

From what I know, only Mapnik currently supports 3D forum.openstreetmap.org/viewtopic.php?id=10342&p=1
Example latlon.org/buildings?zoom=18&lat=55.86289&lon=37.49092&layers=BT
Found that OSM works on Mapnik, I would like to hear - who has experience with mapnik and MapServer - what are the impressions of both ?!
This is not an answer, but just an observation - we first used the JavaScript engine, but its performance was absolutely unacceptable - the browser did not pull more than a hundred polygons (IE, and the rest are not very good). So we switched to Flash - several thousand polygons are easily displayed there.

I think you should ask the question directly to the developers, like catching them at a conference. Here is an OSM activist on Habré:
PS Wikimapia uses its backend engine to generate its tiles, the front is google maps + its own.
and what is "engine" in the current context?
ps. the stack used on osm.org is quite clearly described on switch2osm.org
