Will “pirate” glasses help vision or can they only damage?

In several books about improving vision, I read about "pirate" glasses, i.e. when you close one eye and read with the other. I know for sure that my father improved his eyesight by a couple of units, reading in such glasses and doing exercises like "dots on glass".
I also tried to do this before when working at a computer, I covered one eye with a cardboard patch, and accordingly I looked with only one eye, after a while I changed it. A closed eye really rests, even after 30-60 minutes one can feel an improvement in the sharpness of vision, unusually bright and juicy colors.
However, after a while, the eyes begin to hurt. Apparently, while one eye is working, it is twice as hard for him, and he gets more tired. Therefore, I am afraid to completely ruin my eyesight (I have -8).
Have you tried this technique and what were the results? Do you think it will damage your eyesight?

I did not wait for answers, but I asked a question to the Excimer clinic online, and this is what they answered me:
Your question:
Hello!
Tell me, please, is wearing "pirate" glasses, closing one eye (in turn, then one then the other) when working at a computer and reading, is it good for the eyes or harmful? I have severe myopia (greater than -8).
Doctor's answer:
With the indicated degree of myopia, prolonged work at the computer is not recommended. As for the use of "pirate glasses", the choice is yours, because. it is not harmful, but there is no benefit from their use.
