Will 7.1 sound work if the sound card is only 5.1?

As far as you understand, I am not an expert in these matters, so I went to the toaster with this problem
. In general, I'm going to buy headphones with a 7.1 sound scheme format, but as far as I understand, my sound card has a 5.1 scheme, there are only 3 jack inputs at the back and 2 in front. But, the headphones are connected via a USB port.
Will 7.1 sound work in the end, or is it not even worth buying?

When connected via USB, the headphones will use their sound card.
