Will 1GB of RAM save a laptop?

A friend gave me an hp pavilion dv5 laptop, an old model. I just need a laptop, and here it's also free. It has 3GB of RAM, if I put it instead of 1GB - 2GB and that will be 4GB. Is it worth doing this at all?
