Wifi in the hotel + VPN?

Stayed at the hotel this weekend. There was wifi using the "captive portal" technology - an open point, when you type the url, it redirects to the authorization page. Entered login / password, redirect to the original resource, we are working.
But it was not there. As soon as I raised VPN (OpenVPN/Android) I lost authorization. There was no time to dig and understand, but the question remained. Why did opening a VPN cause an authorization reset?
PS. My guess is that during the initialization process, OpenVPN does an ARP flush, which takes down the ARP route set by the hotel portal. I'm right?

ssl vpn, ms-sstp, softether vpn ... doesn't it seem strange to you to continue to rape the cold corpse of openvpn when there are so many options for comfortable work? =)

I don't think ARP flush is the culprit.. captive portal usually doesn't require manipulation and ARP
