Why, when the video card is idle, can the system freeze?
There is an HD7950 video card. The problem is that if, after loading windows, you do not turn on any application that actively uses 3d, the system hangs tightly. The screen turns off and the speakers rattle.
The problem is localized in the video card. If you connect it to another PC, this problem moves to it. If you connect another video card - everything is normal. In the rest of the gland there are definitely no problems.
The system freezes only when idle. If you seriously load the video card, it can work for hours without any problems. She definitely has enough food, with a large margin.
I've seen graphics cards hang under load/overheating. But, to hang from idle time - the first time. What could be the problem and is it possible to fix it?

You can try to fix the problem by overclocking :)
Increase the minimum frequency of the video core in idle / 2D, it can help.
roll back the drivers to the old ones, and by the way, after what did this behavior start?
