Why is www still alive?

It used to be a forced measure.

Previously, subdomains helped to distinguish the content on the server, the subdomains mail.domain.ru, nntp.domain.ru, etc. were widely used. By the way, due to the weak computing power, different subdomains referred to different physical servers.

Though why it was impossible to leave a web-muzzle on the main domain?
Why do they still support www in front of the address? What for?
(google, yandex and many others)

"Grandmothers" won't understand what's on the billboard for the inscription like name.inet , they'll think someone put a dot instead of a space, and if so www. name.inet , that is, the option that they will remember that this is connected to the Internet. In general, the moral of this fable is that www is simply clearer and more beautiful on paper

We have some fucked-up SEOs who once decided that www is good and because of this, several sites are still with www.

And you ping www.google.ru and google.ru, they point to different ip.
I know a couple of gaming sites where the address of the game server is exactly the same as the address of the site, and when entering the site, it always redirects to www. It turns out that the address of the site itself is assigned to www.site.ru, and the address of the server is assigned to site.ru. Perhaps Google, Yandex and other things have the same thing.
But all this is purely my assumption, because. I have never asked this question and most likely I guess wrong
