Why is the Windows\Installer directory needed and can it be cleared?

Almost ran out of disk space. He began to look for what interests him. The champion, of course, is winsxs, but Windows\Installer also attracted attention - 9 gigs of some installers, why are they needed there?

A cache of all previously installed MSIs is stored there. For example, if you accidentally delete entries in the registry. Then run the application and the registry entries will be restored from the MSI in the cache.

I deleted. The toad was choking. I wish I hadn't.
Now, when updating almost any program, it asks for * .msi, which I don't have. But this is not the worst thing, because you can download the old version. If you update Windu, then it will ask for * .msi, which you can’t even find on the Internet - in this case you will have to pick * .cabs of the installation disk or some SP.
