Why is preprocess_page throwing a white page?

Very strange behavior of template.php. As soon as I insert the theme_preprocess_page(&$variables) hook anywhere, the site crashes immediately. Produces a white sheet. Tried to use hook_preprocess_page - zero emotion. What is this glitch? If the topic is crooked, then where to look for the error? Drupal 7
