Why is pkexec needed?

sudo. su. doaswork as it should. pkexecis included in the FreeBSD12 base distribution and does not work out of the box

$ pkexec env DISPLAY=$DISPLAY XAUTHORITY=$XAUTHORITY firefox
Error getting authority: Error initializing authority: Could not connect: No such file or directory
