Why is node.js not seeing modules?

There is a server on the path var/path
If I run npm start/node name.js, then it tells me that the modules are not found, but when I installed them, they are on the path /home/user/.npm/. So, the question is: What needs to be done so that the server can see these modules? Ubuntu.
