Why is it impossible to connect two lines in ai?

I can't properly connect two lines. I suspect that this is due to the fact that one is a zigzag and the other is straight. The ends don't want to come off without making one of the lines either straight or zigzag. What to do? I'm at a dead end.

First, transform the zigzag through Object -> Expand Appearance, and then join.
