Why "dwm.exe - Wrong Image" and how to fix it?

The following window is displayed:
dwm.exe - The erroneous image
"C:\Windows\system32\dxgi.dll" is either not designed to run under Windows or contains an error. Try reinstalling the program using the original installation media, or contact your system administrator or software vendor for support.
Why?
How to fix?

first of all (for windows vista and above) try:
run command prompt as administrator
sfc /scannow - then read the resulting logs and fix the errors found.
Also, this file may be infected with Backdoor:Win32/Ciadoor.T virus - check for viruses
This file belongs to direct X - it might be worth reinstalling it.
