Why doesn't the screen light up when I take the phone away from my ear?

The phone has a password + fingerprint scanner.
Iphone 8 plus latest firmware.
I talk on the phone, when I finish the call I take the phone away from my ear and try to turn off the screen.
But to my surprise, the screen is not counted, I have to manually press the round button
. Has anyone encountered this?
Happens periodically, sometimes normal, sometimes buggy.
