Why does the OS not see the entire amount of RAM?

Суть проблемы вот в чём:
имеется ноутбук hp g62-400er. В нём установлено из коробки 4 ГБ ОЗУ.
Однако с определённого момента в системе вместо положенных 4 ГБ памяти доступно только 1.74 (условно берём 2, т.к. 256 съедает видео)
Системы пробовал разные. Конкретно: Debian 8.1amd64+kernel4.5, Win7Pro x64, сейчас стоит Win10Pro x64.
В биосе (а точнее в его жалком подобии) отображается 4 гб, мемтест проходит на ура, а система продолжает видеть только 1.74 ГБ
Что это может быть?

• Check if the dice in lshw is visible from the OS:
  
• Убедитесь, что в `/etc/default/grub` и `/boot/grub/grub.cfg` нигде не было жёстко указанного количества памяти (выглядит, как mem=1024mb).
  
• Попробуйте перевоткнуть плашки памяти ещё раз.
  
• Try updating the BIOS from the manufacturer's website.
  
• Make sure your motherboard supports this amount of memory.

You can check the memory with memtest . So we will understand whether the memory is really good. If the test gives errors, you can try to pull out the modules, clean the contacts with an eraser, swap the modules, identify and replace the faulty one.
As an option, it's still worth looking through all the settings related to memory in the BIOS. Or just reset the BIOS settings to default.

пуск - выполнить - msconfig - Загрузка - Дополнительно -
СНЯТЬ ФЛАЖОК максимум памяти.
галку сними/поставь (бывают варианты когда всё работает с точностью до наоборот,
т.е. нужно именно перезаписать в загрузчике эти опции
