Why does the computer slow down?

I understand that the computer is far from new, but still the question. Why can he be VERY slow?
There are no games on the PC, from 1s programs for work and the Google Chrome browser. It opens everything for a very, very long time, even if nothing is really running.
On the one hand, many will say that it is outdated, but then the question is for you. Why 4 years ago on the same PC it was easy to play toys (albeit not the newest ones), work with the browser in parallel and do something else, but now you can’t even just go to “my computer” and surf the Internet without brakes ? And in games, it didn’t lag. Maybe it's a problem in something else then?

Version 1C-ki did not show. 8.2, 8.3? (8.3 is very demanding on resources)
1. Disable Windows updates. It happens often when they are enabled, but not all are installed, one of the svchost files ate the RAM.
2. Install ccleaner - kill everything superfluous from autorun and scheduled tasks, incl. auto-update of java, flash player, browsers, reminders about the end of support for winhr
3. More and more new features are added to googlechrome, which eats up RAM.
4. Put chrome 5 years ago and check the speed. It is desirable that year when there was no html5 yet
5. Defragment a disk and make chkdsk
6. The screw from an old age too can brake. (Ideally try with a different screw)
7. Spin the power supply. Check carefully for even a single swollen capacitor. Yes, even without "swollen" ones, it can be the cause of the brakes (recently I replaced the power supply unit with an expiration client and began to work much faster)
8. If it's stupid with 1C, "defragment" (I don't remember what it's called correctly) the base.

Those computers were good. They are still good. But, since that time, some technologies have developed very strongly, for example, Web / Browsers. They require completely different resources. It's called "obsolete computer". It works, but is no longer suitable for solving modern problems. But if you put Windows 3.11 on it, then it will fly SO =)))))

The first is categorically little memory. Programs have become much more resource-consuming.
The second is the state of the hard drive? Look at SMART, maybe it's time to change the disk. If healthy, then at least defragment.
The points are interconnected. Memory is now being actively swapped to disk, and if it dies, then what speed is there!

As mentioned earlier, install at least one more bar of 512 MB RAM. Instead of chrome, put firefox, it spends more economical RAM. It will not fly, but it will become more or less acceptable.
