Why does the color change to shades of gray when replacing a color in Photoshop?

You need to change the color from white to orange to PNG, i.e. there is only one layer. I press correction -> color replacement -> I choose white color, I specify the color for replacement (orange), and already in the preview the image turns out to be gray. The color mode is RGB, the layer, as I already wrote, is 1. If black is replaced with some other color, then the same thing happens - gray again. If you try to replace other colors (green, yellow, etc.) - everything is fine, everything changes, but white or black - nothing, shades of gray ... What's the problem? I have a license and the latest version of Photoshop.
