Right. It's there for the same purpose as USB ports and a FireWIre port. Only this is not only for Air, for any MacBook. After all, it is logical that since you buy a display, then you have a MacBook, and the display will be at home. And since it is at home, then why do you need to plug all the necessary and unnecessary wires into the laptop every time, if you can plug them into the display and connect just one Thunderbolt to the laptop.

Everything written above is correct. It's a port expander or docking station, if you will. Bring a laptop home / to work, plug only two cables into it from the monitor: Thunderbolt and MagSafe (in fact, this is one bifurcated cable). Everything else (network, keyboard / mouse, peripherals) is already plugged into the monitor.
