Why does an empty excel file open from office 365?

I'm using office 365 in a browser. 365 excel has an open in desktop app button. When I click it, a pop-up window appears with the suggestion "Do you want to open URL:Excel Protocol application?" I click open. Next, my desktop excel starts, writes a request to the server for information, downloads, adds this location to your account, after which a blank sheet. Why is this happening? Excel files that are already on the computer open perfectly. Office 2016, google chrome browser.
