Why does 3proxy need the ANONYMOUS constant?

In many 3proxy configuration guides, there are paragraphs that suggest adding the ANONYMOUS constant to the proxy.h source file:
#define ANONYMOUS 1
But I could not find a detailed description anywhere for what it is needed for.
In general, can anyone explain or poke a link?

-a (for proxy) - anonymous proxy (no information about client reported)
