Why do Windows programs check themselves for updates?
Programs like Discord, Spotify, Firefox Dev Edition etc. after closing and reopening looking for updates, it's infuriating. The first launch is ok, but all subsequent times it checks. The computer only has a C drive.

Because there is no single application manager or repository for desktop Windows applications. They are responsible for software updates. Some don't check for updates at all, others do it too zealously.
Because Microsoft has not offered an adequate system of repositories for the entire time of its existence, and when it gave birth to its own understore, it managed to add other people's branches - only through the ass (private store). Monopolists cannot understand in any way that convenient and efficient systems are only decentralized, without a single center - a great example of linux package managers like debian / ubuntu or like redhat.
There are 3rd-party repositories of applications, unfortunately developers do not want to add their own to them ... because of 'what the hell am I going to bother with some leftist systems'.
ps of course, googleapps (as an example of pm for android from a monopolist) is now at its best, but they still have problems (and users and businesses already), there is no strength to even swear about their technical implementation, nowhere is worse.
