Why do the '\n' characters disappear when sending a txt file by e-mail?

The '\r' characters are preserved.
I send in a zip archive, nothing is lost.

Have you tried placing \n just by hitting enter?
In my php as well) \n refuses to work, I just had to insert enters right away and they worked exactly the same, even tab indents had to be removed.
