Why do new followers appear on twitter without my knowledge?

The problem is this: sometimes (the last time this didn't happen for over a month) I get new followers on twitter, even though I didn't add them myself.
I used to think that this was due to account hacking, I changed the settings, but it did not help.
The current settings are as follows:

  • Password is 24 characters long, changed recently.
  • Send login verification requests to my number, that is, two-factor authentication is enabled. (The phone number was recently linked.)
  • Require personal information to reset my password. That is, to reset the password, you must enter your email or phone number.
  • There are no linked apps.

Despite all this, I followed @ImagesQuote this week and it looks like I'm not the only one as they have 24K followers.
And another important note: the account was registered for a long time, I did not use it for a long time. During this time, it was hacked, and some time ago I returned access to the account, changed the password (after that I changed it several more times), tied the phone, turned on two-factor authorization, notifications for any actions with the account. After that, I hope the hackers lost control of the account.
I use Twitter only through the browser at home and at work, and in both cases I am constantly logged in.
Why can this be? Viruses on your computer, but in this case, subscriptions would appear much more often? A hole in twitter that allows clickjacking or something like that?
And, of course, I tried to find the answer to this question. Basically, all the answers come down to account hacking.

Connecting and blocking access to third-party applications

Most likely, you had a third-party application connected through which the attackers performed actions on your behalf. You can disable them here: https://twitter.com/settings/applications
To semi-automatically unsubscribe, as an alternative to paid services like manageflitter.com, I used the following method (the actions were performed in Google Chrome):
1. Your account page with readable ( https://twitter.com/following), downloaded by as many people as possible.
2. The JS console opens (Shift+Ctrl+J).
3. Run the following code in the console: $('.user-actions-follow-button').click();
Thus, there is an automatic pressing of the "Reading" buttons, and, as a result, unsubscribing from them.

Maybe the fact is that you are constantly authorized at work?

I have the same problem .. I changed the password, access to applications, only official for Android. The tablet was even checked by Dr Web-ohm)) In general, 834 new subscriptions appeared, when I have 3-4 of my own in total)))) As a result, I wrote a script for Sikuli - here is the script .
We open the page with subscriptions, run the script and it just clicks all the "read" buttons. As a result, the computer quickly clears the subscription list itself. Maybe it will come in handy for someone (=
And it’s not clear what’s the matter with Twitter ..

And I have the same garbage and the story that the account was hacked earlier - one to one. I don’t understand where the readable ones come from))))))))))
