Why did the terminal stop working in VS Code?

Question

terminal emulator

For no reason, I sat down at the computer (win10), launched vscode, launched the command line in it and nothing. just empty. No errors, nothing.

tried both cmd and powerShell and bash - none of it starts. The only thing bash threw into the root of the project was a file with the following content:

Google didn't give me any errors. Demolished vscode, put clean - still does not work.
