Why did ProFTPd on CentOS stop working and freeze after login?
On a server with 600 days uptime, ProFTPd stopped working a few days ago, despite the fact that I did nothing on the server. Restarting proftpd did not help.
The situation is this:
1. I'm trying to connect via ftp: ftp domain.com.
2. An invitation to enter a login appears. I enter login, I press enter.
3. The terminal hangs.
I looked in the logs - it's empty there (just the records "ftp opened", "ftp timeout"), restarting the service did not help either, updating yum update too. Port 21 listens, proftpd hangs in processes, accepts connection requests, but it hangs on like a login. I tried to connect through third-party software (FAR), it also hangs on the phrase "sending username" and then falls off by timeout.
I proceed from the fact that the config did not change at all and the server was not touched.
What could be the reason?

In general, after I could not find a solution either on stackoverflow, or on linux.org.ru, or here, or from my acquaintances, I solved the problem with yum install vsftpd :-D :-D :-D So well, this problematic proftpd, if vsftpd works without problems. :-) Thanks to all.
Maybe they are trying to break you?

Most likely, there are problems with the active / passive mode of the client (well, or your NAT settings on the client have changed).
Try to connect locally from the server (using the ftp [email protected] command).
