What to do if Mint's root partition is full and it won't start?

The root partition was completely used up. Can't login after reboot, "wrong password try again"
What can I do to avoid reinstalling Mint
I'm a beginner

Boot from a bootable flash drive and clean up the /home/username directory
You can safely demolish /home/username/.cache
