Why can't you create a server on a computer?

Hello, there is a need to place the site and all files (several million) on a separate computer in order to increase the amount of memory, it also annoys the moment that the hosters have full access to my scripts .. and calmly rummage around there when I clarify some information in support, I looked that you can install xampp and buy ip, I plan to use a clean computer, without any programs, what's the minus? Many say that this should not be done, but why it is not clear

Well, making a server on ordinary household hardware is somewhat unreliable.
Plus, a home Internet channel can be unstable and crashes will drop your site for many hours.
Rent a unit in the data center or the entire server and put the site there.

Well, I’ve had a server from a regular PC for 5 years already, a year due to an Internet provider or electricity it may not work somewhere up to 10 days, but it’s not critical, there are already two such servers)

Why not? Where is that written? Will any sanctions be imposed on you?
Yes, please do.

What nonsense? Who said that? (Probably, my mailer and the site are not aware of this, otherwise they would probably have fled somewhere - they mobilized local cockroaches so that the server was dragged away :D)
Well, for example, I have a server at home since ... uh ... 2010 :) At first - an old wheelbarrow decommissioned in the office. Then a newer car - also decommissioned. Then the old workstation. A year ago I bought a real server - one-unit, with an iron RAID.
The advantage of this option is usually one, but significant:
- Your data is only yours, you certainly do not share it with anyone. There are many paranoids of varying degrees of stubbornness for whom this covers everything :)
- Remote control over the network is possible (for a normal server, of course)
There are also disadvantages:
- The server is taking up space
- The server is NOISY! (Even in spite of the fact that it was selected precisely for the "quietness" of the work and the fact that the coolers are set to a minimum)
- The server eats electricity, it needs a booster.
- The server has wearing parts, it breaks, it needs to be repaired.
- The speed of the channel will be unstable, flat rate prov will certainly give if you ask, but it will cost - as for a yurik

The downside is that if your network drops, you forget to pay for the Internet or the lights turn off, your server will fall for N times. Therefore, it is better to take vds and put on it.
